How widespread is the Russian language?

In Armenia, the majority understand Russian and speak it at least fluently. Many legislative acts are duplicated in Russian. It is easy to find a Russian-speaking notary, lawyer or translator in any field. Therefore, if your work does not require communication with people (remote work, project work, etc.), you do not need to know Armenian.

In what areas is knowledge of Armenian necessary?

  • All education takes place in Armenian, with the exception of individual kindergartens, classes in schools and branches of Russian universities
  • Court and clerical work - also in Armenian
  • You will need to know the language if you work in sales and services

Do I need to learn Armenian?

Yes. For several reasons:
  • You may feel uncomfortable if your colleagues discuss something in a language you do not know.
  • You will better understand cultural and behavioral characteristics, including in work processes and business
  • You will be able to communicate more effectively with local residents, especially with post-Soviet generations
  • It is not known how relations between Russia and Armenia will change in the future. So it's better to have a plan B.

We talked about ways to learn the Armenian language in this article.
