Description

The core of the Museum’s collection consists of exhibits from the House of Folk Art, created in the 1930s through the efforts of ethnographer and collector Abetnak Babayan. On this basis, in 1978, thanks to the activities of the Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR and with the assistance of the Ministry of Culture of Armenia, the State Museum of Folk Art of Armenia was created.

In 2020, renamed the Museum of Folk Arts. Hovhannes Sharambeyan. The museum has a branch in Dilijan and an exhibition hall of Artistic woodworking in Yerevan (A. Paronyan St.).

The Center's collection (about 10,000 exhibits) includes works of artistic processing of wood, metal, stone, jewelry and pottery, carpets and carpets, embroidery and lace, and works by self-taught artists. Gifts from Diaspora Armenians occupy a special place in the collection.

Most of the Center's exhibits are highly artistic works representing folk art of almost all historical and ethnographic regions of Armenia, covering various stages of its development.

The Museum's activities are aimed at preserving and developing ethnic culture. The museum organizes both personal exhibitions of folk craftsmen and international exhibitions of decorative and applied arts, numerous events: folk and traditional festivals, folk song and dance concerts, choral and jazz evenings, presentations of books, albums, screenings and discussions of films, etc. , conducts scientific and educational work: conferences, lectures, master classes.

Since 2017, through the efforts of the staff of the Department of Preservation and Promotion of Folk Art, courses teaching folk art have been conducted from Syunik to Tavush: embroidery, artistic woodworking, ceramics, making khachkars, painting, folk songs and dances.

For different age groups, the museum offers a number of educational courses: carpet weaving, carpet making, embroidery, lace, etc. Collaborates with universities and schools, travel agencies, various cultural structures, jointly creates programs and implements them.
